About these space coloring pages
Start close to home with the Moon and Earth, then travel out to Mars, Jupiter, Saturn's rings, a spiral galaxy and the whole solar system in these space coloring pages, with a comet and a solar eclipse along the way. Easy pages give ages 3 to 5 one big object to color. Moons, a satellite or a telescope join in on the medium pages for ages 6 to 8, hard pages fill the sheet with space scenes for ages 9 and up, and the expert set includes a solar system mandala and an old observatory.
The solar system mandala makes a handy science activity for older kids: color the eight planets, then say their order out loud from the Sun outward. For a night-sky look, color the background dark blue or black and leave the stars white, or add tiny dots with a white gel pen.
Also in kawaii coloring pages.
Space facts to share
- There are eight planets in our solar system, and Jupiter is the largest.
- Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to travel from the Sun to Earth.
- Saturn's rings are made mostly of chunks of ice, with some rock and dust.
Color idea: Use deep navy or black backgrounds, bright yellow for the Sun, and true-to-life planet colors such as rusty red for Mars and tan stripes for Jupiter.
Space coloring page questions
Is Pluto on the solar system page?
No. The expert solar system mandala shows the Sun with the eight planets on its orbit rings: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006, so kids can add it beyond Neptune as a small extra if they like.
What colors are the planets?
Mercury is gray, Venus is pale yellow, Earth is blue and green, Mars is reddish, Jupiter has tan and orange stripes and Saturn is pale gold. Uranus and Neptune are both pale blue-green, with Neptune a little bluer. Real colors make a great science reference.
Which space page is best for preschoolers?
Start with the easy pages: the ringed planet, the full Moon with craters, the comet or planet Earth. Each shows one big object with very little background, so young children can color it quickly and talk about what they see in the sky.
