About these turkey coloring pages

This flock of turkey coloring pages runs from a plump turkey with a fanned tail for preschoolers to a realistic wild turkey portrait for teens and adults. Ages 3 to 5 do well with the easy designs, ages 6 to 8 with the farm and family scenes, and kids 9 and up with the forest flock, parade and farmyard pictures.

For a Thanksgiving classroom activity, hand out the handprint turkey and have each child write one thing they are thankful for on every feather, then display the flock in the hallway. At home, a turkey coloring page makes a good place card: color it, fold the bottom edge and add a guest's name in the margin.

Turkey facts to share

  1. Wild turkeys are native to North America. They can fly short distances and roost in trees at night.
  2. Male turkeys are called toms or gobblers, females are called hens, and baby turkeys are called poults.
  3. US Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November. Canada's Thanksgiving falls on the second Monday of October.

Color idea: Layer browns and bronzes on the body, then give each tail feather bands of rust, gold and tan so the fan looks striped like a real wild turkey's.

Turkey coloring page questions

Which turkey page works best for a Thanksgiving craft?

The handprint turkey with finger feathers works especially well. Children can color it, write a thankful thought on each feather, then cut it out and glue it to a paper plate or a strip of cardstock for a table decoration.

What colors are real wild turkeys?

Wild turkeys are mostly dark brown and bronze, with feathers that shine green and copper in sunlight. Their tail feathers have tan or rusty tips, and a tom's bare head can turn red, white or blue when he is excited.

What is the red flap on a turkey's face?

The flap that hangs over the beak is the snood, and the one under the chin is the wattle. Both swell and turn brighter red when a tom is showing off, so a strong red or pink gives a lifelike look.
