About these boat coloring pages
Sailboats, tugboats, canoes and tall ships float through these boat coloring pages. Ages 3 to 5 can start with a little sailboat on rolling waves or a chubby tugboat with a tall smokestack. At ages 6 to 8, a canoe drifts among cattails and a paper boat sails across a rain puddle. Kids 9 and up get a three-masted sailing ship on the open sea and a ferry crossing a sunny bay, and teens and adults can fill a detailed ship in a bottle or a sailboat mandala ringed with anchors and waves.
After coloring the paper boat, fold a real one and test it in a sink or a puddle. The ship pages also lead into lessons on explorers, harbors and why heavy boats float.
Also in spring coloring pages and summer coloring pages.
Boat facts to share
- A boat floats because it pushes aside an amount of water that weighs as much as the boat itself.
- Sailboats can't sail straight into the wind, so they zigzag toward it in a move called tacking.
- Tugboats are small, but their powerful engines let them push and pull ships many times their size.
Color idea: Paint hulls in bold solid colors with a contrasting stripe along the top, keep the sails white or cream, and layer blues and greens for the water.
Boat coloring page questions
Are there ship coloring pages too?
Yes. The tall sailing ship with three masts, the ferry crossing a bay and the detailed ship in a bottle all show ships, while the simpler pages focus on smaller boats like a sailboat, a tugboat and a canoe.
Which boat page suits preschoolers?
The little sailboat on rolling waves and the chubby tugboat each have one big boat, thick outlines and simple waves, so they are easy for ages 3 to 5.
How do I make the water look real?
Use two or three blues, darker low in each wave and lighter at the crest, and leave thin white gaps for sparkle. In the ferry scene, add sandy tan on the beach and bright stripes on the umbrellas.
