About these turtle coloring pages

Sea turtles get most of the spotlight in these turtle coloring pages, but pond turtles, a box turtle and tortoises join them too. A single turtle with simple shell plates keeps the easy pages manageable for ages 3 to 5, while 6- to 8-year-olds get a log, garden or coral patch as well. Beach, island and ocean scenes suit ages 9 and up, and the expert pages feature a mandala shell, an ornate wave border and a detailed lily pond.

The sea turtle designs are a good way into a talk about ocean conservation, such as why hatchlings need dark, quiet beaches. To make shells look real, color each plate a slightly different shade of brown or green and outline the edges a little darker.

Turtle facts to share

  1. Sea turtles cannot pull their heads into their shells the way many land and pond turtles can.
  2. The leatherback is the largest turtle alive, and it eats mostly jellyfish.
  3. A turtle's shell is part of its skeleton and is joined to its ribs and backbone.

Color idea: Mix olive green, golden brown and amber on the shell plates, and use soft aqua water so the turtle stands out.

Turtle coloring page questions

What is the difference between a turtle and a tortoise?

Tortoises are turtles that live on land. They usually have tall, domed shells and sturdy, elephant-like legs, while sea turtles have flatter shells and flippers for swimming. The collection includes both, so kids can compare them side by side.

Which turtle page is easiest?

The smiling sea turtle and the little box turtle are the simplest pages, each with one large turtle and almost no background. The hatchling page is also easy and makes a nice starting point for talking about how turtles begin life.

Why are the hatchlings heading for the water at night?

Many sea turtle hatchlings dig out of their nests at night when the sand is cooler. They crawl toward the brightest horizon, which is usually moonlight over the sea, then swim out to open water. The hard beach page shows this journey.
