About these bug coloring pages

Beetles, grasshoppers, dragonflies, ants and a mantis fill these bug coloring pages, a mini insect field guide for kids. Ages 3 to 5 can color a beetle with a shiny shell or a grasshopper perched on a blade of grass. Ages 6 to 8 get a dragonfly resting on a cattail and a mantis waiting on a flower stem, and kids 9 and up can explore ant tunnels under a garden or a cricket, a beetle and a butterfly on a mossy log.

Teens and adults can try the insect mandala and a detailed rhinoceros beetle close-up. For a backyard or school bug hunt, head outside with a magnifying glass and have kids color each insect they actually find. Counting six legs on every bug is a handy check.

Also in spring coloring pages.

Bug facts to share

  1. Every insect has six legs, two antennae and a body in three parts: the head, the thorax and the abdomen.
  2. Spiders are not insects; they have eight legs and a body in just two parts.
  3. A dragonfly can move each of its four wings on its own, so it can hover and even fly backward.

Color idea: Insects come in every color, so try shiny metallic greens and blues for beetles, pale see-through blues for dragonfly wings and leafy greens or tans for the grasshopper and mantis.

Bug coloring page questions

Is a spider a bug?

Not an insect. Spiders have eight legs and two body parts, while insects have six legs and three body parts. Every creature on these pages is an insect, so kids can count six legs on each one, from the grasshopper to the mantis.

Which bug pages are good for preschoolers?

Try the easy beetle seen from above or the grasshopper on a blade of grass. Each shows a single big insect with bold shapes and almost no background, which suits ages 3 to 5.

Which page works for a science lesson on ants?

The hard ant tunnels page shows a cutaway of the soil under a garden, with a queen ant beside her eggs, worker ants in the tunnels, and roots and pebbles all around. Use it to talk about how an ant colony shares out its jobs.
