About these cactus coloring pages

Spiny, rounded and sometimes in bloom, cacti fill these cactus coloring pages, from a kawaii barrel cactus to a whole desert valley. Ages 3 to 5 can start with a tall saguaro under a round sun or a smiling cactus in a striped pot. Ages 6 to 8 get succulent pots on a windowsill and a desert tortoise under a prickly pear, and the hard pages for 9 and up show blooming cacti in a desert valley and an adobe house with a cactus garden.

Teens and adults can color a cactus mandala or a detailed prickly pear with a hummingbird. If you keep a cactus or succulent at home or in class, set it beside the coloring table so kids can look closely at its ribs, spines and shape as they color.

Cactus facts to share

  1. Cactus spines are changed leaves that help the plant lose less water and keep hungry animals away.
  2. Saguaro cacti grow very slowly and can live for more than 150 years.
  3. Almost all cacti come from North and South America.

Color idea: Layer sage, olive and bright greens on the cactus ribs, paint the pots in bold stripes or terracotta, and give the flowers hot pink, yellow or coral petals.

Cactus coloring page questions

Which cactus pages suit preschoolers?

The easy pages are made for ages 3 to 5: a saguaro cactus with two upturned arms under a round sun and a kawaii barrel cactus with a happy face in a striped pot. Each has one big plant and very little background.

What is the difference between a cactus and a succulent?

Succulents are plants that store water in thick leaves, stems or roots. Cacti are one family of succulents, and most have spines growing from small bumps called areoles. The windowsill page shows both, with a barrel cactus beside an aloe and a rosette succulent.

How do I color a cactus so it looks real?

Use several greens, deeper in the grooves between the ribs and lighter on the raised edges, and keep the spines pale yellow or white. Add bright pinks, yellows or oranges to the blooms and fruits for contrast.
