About these horse coloring pages

Foals, ponies, draft horses and wild horses all appear in this collection of horse coloring pages. Little ones aged 3 to 5 can start with a single horse drawn in simple shapes, and kids aged 6 to 8 can move up to a horse beside a barn, fence or meadow. Full scenes suit ages 9 and up, while teens and adults get intricate patterns on the expert designs.

For a classroom tie-in, print a few pony coloring pages and ask kids to point out the mane, hooves, tail and withers before they start. For realistic coats, layer brown and tan pencils in the direction the hair grows, and leave a pale streak along the back to suggest shine.

Also in christmas coloring pages, fall coloring pages, winter coloring pages, spring coloring pages, summer coloring pages and kawaii coloring pages.

Horse facts to share

  1. A baby horse is called a foal, and most foals can stand within a couple of hours of being born.
  2. Horses are measured in hands, and one hand equals 4 inches. A fully grown pony is generally 14.2 hands or shorter.
  3. Horses can doze while standing up because special tendons and ligaments lock their legs in place.

Color idea: Layer two or three browns for a bay or chestnut coat, make the mane and tail a shade darker, and leave a tiny white highlight in each eye.

Horse coloring page questions

Which horse pages are best for preschoolers?

Start with the easy pages, such as the standing pony or the resting foal. Each shows one horse with thick outlines and very little background, so small hands can fill big areas without frustration. Move up to medium pages once your child enjoys adding a fence or barn.

What colors can real horses be?

Real horses come in many coat colors, including bay (brown with a black mane and tail), chestnut (reddish brown), black, gray and palomino (golden with a pale mane), plus spotted patterns such as pinto and Appaloosa. Kids are welcome to invent fantasy colors too.

Do the horse pages show different breeds?

Yes. Across the levels you will find a shaggy Shetland pony, feathered draft horses pulling a hay wagon, a high-tailed Arabian horse and wild horses galloping on the prairie. The expert pages add a pattern-filled horse head and an ornate carousel horse for older colorists.
