About these duck coloring pages

Fluffy ducklings, a waddling mallard and a mother duck leading her babies set the tone for these duck coloring pages. Preschoolers aged 3 to 5 can color one big, simple duck. For ages 6 to 8, the medium pages add a path, a puddle or reeds. Pond and river scenes give ages 9 and up plenty to fill, and the expert pages are covered in feather patterns.

Ducks fit naturally into spring lessons about baby animals or rainy weather. After coloring, try a quick counting game with the mother duck and her ducklings. For water, use light blue pencil strokes going sideways, then add darker ripples near each duck.

Duck facts to share

  1. Ducks spread oil from a gland near their tail over their feathers, which helps keep them waterproof.
  2. A male duck is called a drake, a female is called a hen, and a baby is a duckling.
  3. Ducklings can walk and swim within about a day of hatching.

Color idea: Give ducklings soft yellow with a pale orange bill, and try an iridescent green-to-blue blend on a mallard drake's head.

Duck coloring page questions

Which duck page suits a preschooler?

The kawaii duckling floating on the water is the simplest, with one round shape, big eyes and almost no background. The waddling mallard is a good second page. Both have thick lines that are easy to follow with crayons.

Why are ducklings jumping from a tree on one page?

Wood ducks often nest in tree hollows, sometimes high above the ground. About a day after hatching, the ducklings jump out and tumble safely to the ground or water, then follow their mother. The hard page shows this real behavior.

What colors is a mallard duck?

A male mallard has a shiny green head, a thin white neck ring, a chestnut chest, a gray body and a yellow bill. Females are mottled brown with an orange and brown bill, which helps them hide on the nest.
