About these new year coloring pages

These New Year coloring pages are full of party hats, confetti and fireworks for the countdown to January 1. Children ages 3 to 5 get big, simple shapes, like a party hat with curly streamers and a kawaii penguin blowing a party horn. Ages 6 to 8 add a light setting, such as a polar bear cub with a party popper or a child celebrating beside a snowman, and kids 9 and up get fireworks over snowy rooftops and the first sunrise of the year over the mountains. Teens and adults can try a New Year mandala, a doodle clock and a snowy owl portrait.

On New Year's Eve, a coloring page keeps young children busy while the grown-ups get the party ready. In January, use the sunrise page to start a talk about goals: kids color the scene, then draw one thing they want to try or learn this year on the back.

New Year facts to share

  1. Because of time zones, the new year arrives at different moments around the world, starting in the Pacific island nation of Kiribati.
  2. In Japan, many people get up early on January 1 to watch the first sunrise of the year, a custom called hatsuhinode.
  3. Most countries now begin the year on January 1, but some cultures also celebrate a new year at other times, such as Lunar New Year in late January or February.

Color idea: Use metallic gel pens or bright markers for the fireworks and confetti, and soft icy blues and silvers for the snowy settings so the party colors stand out.

New Year coloring page questions

Which New Year pages suit preschoolers?

The easy pages are made for ages 3 to 5: the party hat with curly streamers, the kawaii penguin blowing a party horn and one big firework over a snowy hill. Each has one large shape and almost no background, so chunky crayons work well.

Do these pages show a year or a greeting?

No. The pictures use fireworks, party hats, streamers, confetti and noisemakers instead of dates or greetings, so they work for any New Year. Older kids can add the new year and their own greeting to the page before they color.

How do I color fireworks so they stand out?

Color each burst in two or three bright shades, such as yellow fading into orange, and leave thin white gaps between the rays so they look like sparks. A soft blue or lavender sky keeps the fireworks easy to see.
