About these santa coloring pages

Santa has plenty of December jobs, and these Santa coloring pages show most of them: waving hello, hauling his sack, sliding down a chimney, feeding a reindeer and flying over sleeping rooftops. The easy pages have one big Santa and very little background for ages 3 to 5, the medium pages put him on a rooftop, in a stable yard or by the tree for ages 6 to 8, and the hard scenes fill the page for kids 9 and up.

Older kids and adults who like classic Santa Claus coloring pages can try the vintage Santa in a long robe, the patterned portrait or the snow globe. At a holiday party, set out the easy designs with crayons as guests arrive, then tape finished pages along a wall as a Santa gallery.

Also in christmas coloring pages, winter coloring pages, summer coloring pages and kawaii coloring pages.

Santa facts to share

  1. The name Santa Claus comes from Sinterklaas, the Dutch name for Saint Nicholas.
  2. In the Netherlands, children leave out a shoe for Sinterklaas, sometimes with a carrot or hay for his horse.
  3. Cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa for Harper's Weekly starting in the 1860s, helping shape his jolly, round-bellied look.

Color idea: Color the suit in two reds, a brighter one for the front and a deeper one in the folds, and leave the beard and fur trim mostly white with light gray shading.

Santa coloring page questions

Which Santa pages work for preschoolers?

The waving Santa, Santa carrying his sack and the close-up of Santa's face are the easy designs. Each has thick outlines and big areas for the suit, beard and hat, which suit chunky crayons and short attention spans.

Does Santa have to wear red?

Red with white fur trim and a black belt is the classic look, but older pictures of Santa and Father Christmas show green, brown or blue robes. The vintage Santa design looks especially good in forest green or deep blue.

Which Santa page is best for a calm evening activity?

Santa relaxing with milk and cookies or the snow globe make good wind-down pages. Older kids may prefer the workshop or the sleigh over the rooftops, which have lots of small toys and chimneys to work through slowly.
