About these elephant coloring pages
African and Asian elephants, from a baby spraying water to a herd led by an older female, fill these elephant coloring pages. Big, rounded shapes keep the easy level simple for ages 3 to 5. Kids ages 6 to 8 can color a mud wallow, a forest river or a mother and calf on the move, and the hard pages for 9 and up show herds, baobab trees and a family safari.
Adults and teens can choose a detailed portrait with wrinkled skin or an elephant filled with mandalas. For a simple art lesson, give kids three or four shades of gray and show them how darker gray in the wrinkles and ear folds makes an elephant look rounder. Older students can compare the African and Asian elephants side by side.
Elephant facts to share
- African elephants are the largest land animals on Earth.
- An elephant's trunk is its nose and upper lip joined together, used for breathing, smelling, drinking and grabbing.
- Elephants flap their big ears to help cool their bodies on hot days.
Color idea: Mix warm and cool grays for the skin, add darker gray in the wrinkles and ear folds, use pale cream for tusks, and try a reddish-brown wash on mud-covered elephants.
Elephant coloring page questions
How can kids tell African and Asian elephants apart?
African elephants have very large ears, while Asian elephants have smaller, rounder ears and a head with two bumps on top. The medium page of an elephant bathing in a forest river shows an Asian elephant; most other pages show African elephants.
Which elephant pages are best for young kids?
The easy pages suit ages 3 to 5: a baby elephant spraying water, an elephant carrying a flower in its trunk and an elephant flapping its big ears. Each one has a single large animal with smooth, rounded outlines and almost no background.
What classroom activity pairs with the herd page?
Elephant herds are led by an older female called the matriarch. After coloring the herd crossing the savanna, ask students to find the matriarch at the front and talk about how animal families work together to find food and water.
