About these snake coloring pages
Nothing here is meant to scare: these snake coloring pages mix friendly cartoon snakes with real species such as a green tree python, a sidewinder and a garter snake. Ages 3 to 5 can start with one smiling snake drawn in smooth, simple curves. Medium pages for ages 6 to 8 put a snake on a branch or a rock, including one wriggling out of its old skin, and the hard pages for 9 and up are set in a desert and a backyard garden.
Teens and adults can try the doodle spiral snake and a detailed snake among tropical flowers. For a science tie-in, pair the shedding page with a talk about why snakes outgrow their skin, or bring in a real shed skin if a nature center can lend one. The long, curvy shapes are also good practice for smooth, controlled strokes.
Also in spring coloring pages.
Snake facts to share
- Snakes smell by flicking their forked tongues to collect scent particles from the air.
- As they grow, snakes shed their whole skin, often in one long piece.
- Snakes have no eyelids; a clear scale covers and protects each eye.
Color idea: Try bright emerald green for the tree python, sandy tans and cream for the sidewinder, and long yellow stripes on dark green or brown for the garter snake.
Snake coloring page questions
Are these snake pages scary?
No. The snakes are drawn as friendly or natural animals, with smiling faces on the easy pages and calm nature scenes on the rest. None of the pictures shows a snake hunting or striking, so the set suits young children and nervous animal fans.
Which kinds of snakes are pictured?
You'll find a green tree python coiled on a branch, a sidewinder crossing desert dunes and a garter snake in a backyard garden, plus cartoon snakes and a snake shedding its skin. Each lives in a different habitat, which makes an easy comparison lesson.
How do I color snake scales?
Color the whole body in a base color first, then add a pattern on top, such as stripes, diamonds or blotches. Many real snakes are lighter on the belly, so leave the underside pale. On the expert pages, shade the edge of each scale for a 3D look.
